There were mighty riffs that came across like an epic wall of sound, thanks to Michael Flacore and Michael Rainbow’s smooth guitar work. That’s exactly what happened too, as the atmosphere became rapturous to some of their greatest numbers. Of course, as soon as the immortal notes of hits such as “Red Stars”, “In the Dark” and “Blue” start to ring out, its always going to be enough to send the crowd into a frenzy. Newer entries from their most recent albums included “Enter”, “Stars and Satellites” and “Precious Hearts”, which all went down a storm as the entire audience savoured every moment. Of course, the music was just as top-notch, comprised of a meticulously crafted set that spanned across their entire discography. The level of joy in the room was so glorious that it simply cannot be put into words. The crowd interaction was off the charts, as frontwoman Chibi reached out to the crowd, quite literally, and actually stepped off stage at one point to distribute hugs. They performed with an energy and enthusiasm that felt unparalleled, which was intensified tenfold thanks to the intimate size of the venue. Right out of the gate it was clear to see that the whole band were overjoyed to be back in the UK, even stating as such. Then it was finally time for The Birthday Massacre, and I can say without hesitation that the five year wait had been absolutely worth it. It was a stunning way to open the evening. Naturally, they pulled it off without a hitch, maybe even giving a certain Mr Reznor and Mr Cash a run for their money. We were also treated to a cover of Nine Inch Nail’s “Hurt”, which is risky territory for any act. Tracks such as “Your Voice” and “Commemorate” resonated majestically and were utterly entrancing, with crunchier segments adding a sinister, tribal sensation that boomed with dominion. Ryan Hawthorne positively delivered on keys and synths, whilst the mightiest weapon in their sonic arsenal came from Erin Hawthorne’s beautifully angelic, moving vocals. This paid off in spades in a live setting, because it made their music powerfully gripping and hauntingly enchanting. This is a duo who’s music isn’t the kind to get a crowd bouncing around with a furious energy, instead focusing on ambient electronic soundscapes to capture a mood, to generate an atmosphere. Although before the main act took to the stage, there was a support slot courtesy of the superb Witch of the Vale.
